I did another batch of Kombucha yesterday, which is starting to be more routine since I have done it so many times now. Funny that the first few times I made it I had to anxiously check the recipe every few minutes, and now I hardly think about it as I'm doing it. Yesterday, however, I had to improvise a bit when I discovered that I was completely out of sugar (I'm sure I made a mental note to buy more the last time I brewed and used it all up, but apparently that note didn't make it out of my brain in time). I decided instead of running to the store quickly (hey, I was still in my jammies) to use brown sugar, which was just sitting there in the cabinet wasting away. I'm sure the recipe will still work, as I read on a KT website that any sweetened beverage can be used to brew Kombucha, but I'm a little nervous about the flavor in the end result. Will just have to wait and see...
This morning I awoke to loud banging and scraping sounds coming through the walls of my kitchen. I ignored them and tried to fall back asleep because I knew that there was some construction work going on in the apartment next door. The sounds got louder and sounded closer after a few minutes, so I fumbled for my glasses and saw, to my great surprise, a plumbing snake emerging from my kitchen sink. I watched as it came out farther until it had reached the floor and tangled itself in the mat in front of the sink. It was at this point that I decided I was going to have to get out of bed. I put a sweater on over my nightgown and knocked on the neighbor's door, and one of the construction guys came over and stuffed the snake back down the drain, after unhooking it from my drain stopper. It turned out that the guy who had lived next door and just moved out had left the apartment in shocking condition, and his pipes had been blocked for quite some time, so they were snaking the drain and somehow it found its way to my sink. Hmm. Two hours later the same plumber knocked (and woke me up again, boohoo) to take another look at the sink, since whatever they had been doing next door had caused my sink to stop draining. He and his supervisor (or is it foreman? head plumber?) poked around and discovered that the pipes under the kitchen sink were not only weirdly connected to the neighbor's pipes, but were ancient and crumbling and mostly held together with black tape. It was actually kind of scary to see the condition the pipes were in, because under the tape they looked about as sturdy as tin foil. So all sorts of vile looking water sloshed onto the floor, I had various guys in and out of my apartment all day, and they all saw me in my jammies. What a day. On the plus side, the pipes didn't burst at an inopportune time, say, when there wasn't an entire team of plumbers present. And my apartment was, just by chance, pretty clean. On the negative, I was held hostage in my apartment the whole time they were working in my kitchen and I didn't have a chance to make a green smoothie today. Oh well.
