Oh, me. Those Giants sure have their meat hooks in my heart. Tonight I was unable to watch the game as it was on cable, so there I was sitting in my apartment listening to it on the radio and doing sudoku puzzles. Sad? Maybe a little bit. But what a game! The last minute lineup changes, the rain delay, and then Lincecum scoring the go-ahead run. Yeah. I wish I had cable.
However, just in case I ever become a major league baseball player, I've picked out my walkup music...
Walkup music is obviously very important to us baseball fans who are less interested in the competitive aspects of the game. I mean, us girls. Although, during the last Giants season I think many fans were probably searching for something other than the actual playing to hold their interest. I remember a few players by their walkup music: let's see, J.T. Snow was "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who, Marquis Grissom was (I think) "Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder, Robb Nen was "Smoke On The Water" (for when he was coming in from the bullpen, of course, since I don't know if I ever saw him bat), and, perhaps the best of all, was David Bell with "For Whom The Bell Tolls" by Metallica. And that's just a taste of how obsessive I can be...
Namely, right now. I haven't lost the desire to watch baseball games on TV, but I definitely never feel optimistic about the outcome. What can they do, though? They all seem to be trying their hardest. ...Sigh. My fanhood is too entrenched to go away now. Still, there's a glimmer of hope: at least we have some hot young players coming up from the minors. Ortmeier, Schierholtz, and ESPECIALLY Lincecum... HOTT!! I don't care if he keeps getting worse, as long as he stays cute:
I went to the Giants-Phillies game today with my family, on "Mexican Heritage Day." Now, I can understand why they would place Mexican Heritage Day on Cinco De Mayo, but why would they lump it together with Omar Vizquel poster day? I mean, he's Venezuelan... Oh well, at least we got neat Giants/Aztec T-shirts out of it. Plus a great game and a nice day out. We were way up in the nosebleed section, but it was alright because of the view:
Oh Giants, how you mock me. I can remember vividly the 2002 season, when I knew the lineup by heart; not just the players' names but their jersey numbers, too. Jeff Kent, Rich Aurilia, J.T. Snow, Shinjo, and the sad old Shawon Dunston. The Giants went to the World Series, which they hadn't done since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and through some miracle (or a well-connected uncle) my family and I got to go to game 5, which was the big delirious blowout before the awful game 6 where everything went to shit. We were emotionally scarred, but that hollow feeling eventually subsided and I was able to recognize that it was just a silly game, played by millionaires who probably didn't feel an ounce of hometown pride, at least not for my hometown.
And now it's all coming back... The Giants have used the strategy of recruiting tired old ex-superstars to keep the fans excited before, but this is pushing it a little. They have brought back Aurilia and Russ Ortiz for some reason, and I just don't know how to feel about it. I mean, I LOVED Rich Aurilia (Ortiz was alright, too). But 2002 is a long time away. I just don't know if it is wise to get excited about the season, when so many geriatrics are going to be out on the field. ...Sigh. Oh, who am I kidding? I can't wait to see Aurilia back in a Giants uniform. Hi-fives all around!!
